PERU WOMEN-ONLY TOUR – (Departures: May 09/Aug 08/Oct 10/Dec 05)

INTRODUCTION – SOLO WOMEN TRAVELER

The main reason to join this Peru Women-Only tour, is that I’ve always wanted not to depend on anyone to visit a destination that was on my bucket list, for some reason or another, company plans were constantly frustrated, the mismatch in the times, in the travel style, in the destination, in the budget, anyway… but I didn’t want to travel alone because I didn’t like the idea of imagining myself having dinner alone in a magical place that I always dreamed of visiting.

That was how I started looking for travel options in groups with women who were in the same situation as me, and it turned out to be a fabulous experience. Share moments with different women, with very different experiences, from diverse cultures, with totally opposite stories, enjoy the joy of the youngest and the wisdom of the elders, the entertaining stories of experienced travelers as of the emotion and fear from the one who travels alone for the first time, listening to the experiences of the most liberal ones like those of the housewife par excellence, made my group trips with other women, become my favorites as I wove a huge network of friends around of the world, with whom we still meet occasionally somewhere in the world to enjoy a new adventure together.

This experience made me learn a lot about tolerance and coexistence, becoming a better human being.Welcome to this trip designed with great enthusiasm and the best of energies, as if it were for myself.

Nonetheless, before getting into the serious stuff, I’d like to try taking you there with words, even if it’s just for a second.

Imagine the highest mountains you can think of, so high they rise above the clouds. Imagine them very narrow, wild and majestic. Now, picture yourself almost at the top of one of these tall and secluded mountains. You can hear the sound of a river that surrounds the valley, like a moat around a fortress. Beyond the river, there’s a foggy chain of other mountains that seems to never end.

The air smells fresh, everything is lush and green. Around you there’s a big, ancient, Inca citadel. You can see it stretching far and wide, up to the edges of the mountains, looking right into the cliff. Streets, terraces, houses. Everything is made up by big, squared and perfectly smooth stones. How on earth did they even build all of this up here?  While you’re contemplating the surroundings, a cutesy looking llama stops by and starts eating grass right in front of you. Suddenly, you feel this intimate connection with time, nature and civilization. It is one of those rare life moments when the world looks as glorious as it can be.

In the highest part you will find a ceremonial center with huge blocks of stone perfectly carved in a very fine work. To build it, stones from the quarry located on the other side of the Urubamba River were used 6 km away. from distance, which shows the great ability of the Incas to transport these huge blocks using an ingenious technique that would allow them to transport them across mountainous areas and the torrential Urubamba River.

You can also visit the enigmatic village that has the same name of the archaeological complex and has been described as a living Inca town, where time took a break, because its buildings are still used by locals who are direct descendants of those who populated the Inca empire.  Walking through its streets and old squares that are still intact will make you feel the magical sensation of returning to the past.

DAY 14 GUIDED VISIT OF MACHU PICCHU AND RETURN TO CUSCO

Breakfast buffet (if you leave before breakfast time, coordinate directly with the hotel)

When, in 1911, the American archaeologist and historian Hiram Bingham discovered “The Lost City of the Inca Empire”, he could not imagine that he had reached the most enigmatic Inca ruins, one of the most spectacular and overwhelming places on earth that still conserves its mystery, charm and mystical appeal, despite its enormous popularity, even more so after having been designated one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. which rises enigmatic among the clouds of the majestic Andes. The citadel was probably the most impressive urban creation of the Inca Empire in its heyday. Its giant walls, terraces and ramps look as if they had been carved naturally in the escarpments of the rock. This natural environment located on the eastern slopes of the Andes encompasses the upper Amazon basin, with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Exploring the place continues to be an exciting experience, especially at dawn, when the scenic rays of light extend over the Andean peaks.

At the indicated time your local guide will pick you up from your hotel to approach the station and then board the bus that goes up to the citadel. After the guided tour, you will descend from the archaeological zone to the station, and embark on the train Expedition, which will meander slowly through the Andean landscape until you reach the town of Ollantaytambo, where you will be transferred to the vehicle (only driver) that will take you back to Cusco.

DAY 16 FLIGHT CUSCO / PUERTO MALDONADO. SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE

Breakfast buffet, box lunch and dinner included

(Group service with English speaking guide)

After enjoy a great experience in the city of the Incas, pick up from the hotel for the transfer to the Cusco Airport for the flight to Puerto Maldonado.

Sandoval Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Peru; a great body of water protected in the Tambopata National Reserve. It is home of a family of Giant Otters in danger of extinction, but we do have an excellent chance to see them during our stay. The banks of the lake are populated by jungle and flooded Mauritia Palm forests, which are home to monkeys from six different species, as well as with huge variety of colorful birds.

This visit to the Tambopata National Reserve allows you to look in Sandoval Lake and the surrounding area where you will see a wealth of wildlife in the reserve and learn about the Amazon rainforest. Our program includes walks through the forest trails by day, night, and through boat excursions around the margins of this extraordinarily beautiful lake.

Our staff will welcome you at the airport in Puerto Maldonado and drive you through the city to the boat dock on the Tambopata River. Here you board a motorized canoe and head towards the nearby confluence of the mighty Madre de Dios River, the source of the Amazon tributary. Just 30 minutes down river is landing at the port that will lead to Sandoval Lake.

You walk a trail of 3 Km (2 mi), stopping to watch birds and butterflies, up to a narrow canal boat. From there, you navigate the flooded forest of palm trees that leads to the open waters of this peaceful lake. Our crew will row the boats across to the lodge (motors are prohibited on the lake). Under the surface of the lake you may see the huge Paiche (an Amazonian fish that can weigh up to 100Kg/220lbs). Or you may hear strange and unsettling screams and see heads peering from the lake surface, which will mark our first encounter with Pteronura brasiliensis, the Giant Otter of the Amazon.

After a brief rest, you start again by boat to explore the entire eastern end of the lake, following the sound of hundreds of Blue-and-Yellow and Red-Breasted Macaws as they return to the palm forest for the night. Your view from the boat often allows close and extensive encounters with birds and mammals. In Sandoval Lake the Capuchin Monkey, in particular, has nearly lost its fear of humans.

You return to the lodge at dusk for dinner. Afterwards you take the boat again, in search of caimans, which are now extremely rare in the Amazon, but are still common in this protected lake. They grow up to 4m long, and dispute their share of fishing with the otters. On clear nights you go by boat farther into the lake for a view of the vast southern sky, unobstructed, with its magnificent views of constellations and the Milky Way.
