The Urubamba begins life under a different name: The Vilcanota River, that flows north and passes to the east of the city of Cusco, running by the Sacred Valley until reaching the town of Urubamba where the river is Christened as Urubamba, so basically is the same river that just change the name according the area where it flows. Itinerary

1-DAY RIVER RAFTING CUSCO VILCANOTA URUBAMBA

Early morning, the guide will pick you up from your hotel, it will take more than an hour driving through valleys, snow-capped mountains and small Andean villages before arriving to the starting point of your adventure.

Upon arrival, your river guide will give you a safety briefing and demonstrate rafting commands. It will be then time to gear up with your wetsuits, helmets, waterproof jacket and life jacket. It will take some minutes to practice all the commands and instructions given, and once, when everyone is ready it’s time to begin your rafting adventure!

DRY SEASON - Mid April to November

CHUQUICAHUANA SECTION- RAPIDS LEVEL II/III

During this season the scenery suffers a transformation from green to multicolored yellow and green grassy mountains and from rainy to dry sunny days. This is a fun day out suitable for beginners aged twelve upwards. There are plenty of rapids along the way and this section of the Vilcanota River passes through a canyon where the water is funneled into the best white-water rafting rapids of the day. The rapids are mixed with small pool sections in between perfect for small swims and jumps from rocks and cliffs, if the weather condition allows it.

After your adventure is finished, you will have a delicious lunch with a fantastic Andean scenery, with hot and cold drinks waiting for you. After lunch, you will return back to Cusco by bus.

RAINY SEASON - December to Mid April

URCOS TO HUAMBUTIO SECTION – Rapids II/III

The Urubamba river opens as it enters to Urcos and Pinipampa towns. This section is a mix of water with fast water current and one of the most scenic stretch of the Urubamba river. The run starts at the village of Urcos and runs for 7.5ml/12 km. down to Huambutio. The river in this section flows through small islands and channels and then enter into a series of gorges with excellent level II and III rapids perfect for beginners and families. After this great adventure, a delicious homemade lunch will be waiting for you. As soon as the van is loaded it’s time to say goodbye to the river and to start the drive back to Cusco.

QUIQUIJANA SECTION – Rapids III/IV

This section of the river offers one of the best whitewater rafting of the Urubamba River. This part of the river is an ideal whitewater for everyone looking for a good adventure. During the course of tour, you will have a chance to see torrent ducks, falcons, herons and mythical ancient tombs. You will encounter more than 40 exciting and continuous level 3 and 4 rapids that will thrill you throughout the 16 km – 9. 5 mi run. After two exhilarating hours we will arrive to the end, where our cook will have a delicious lunch prepared with fresh ingredients ready for us. This is a section of pure fun without the anxiety that sometimes follows tougher runs, is suitable for first timers with good fitness level, intermediate rafters and can also satisfied advanced boaters. As soon as the van is loaded it’s time to say goodbye to the river and to start the drive back to Cusco.

CHUQUICAHUANA SECTION– Rapids IV/IV+

The river welcomes you with gentle small rapids perfect to practice before entering the big ones. The river then transforms into a long constant series of rapids full of massive holes and waves. Chuquicahuana section, in rainy season, is only for adventurous intermediate and experienced rafters.

After this thrilling adventure, a delicious homemade lunch will be waiting for you.

As soon as the van is loaded it’s time to say goodbye to the river and to start the drive back to Cusco.
