You cannot miss this magnificent 2-day Abra Malaga Birding Tour! Bird watching is reported as being the fastest growing outdoor activity in America and the surroundings of Abra Malaga is one of the paradises for Bird-Based Tourism.

This program is designed for serious birders as Abra Malaga is a famous birding site and a must for some Polylepis specialist, especially White-browed Tit-Spinetail (endemic) and Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant (endemic), and above all for the critically endangered Royal Cinclodes, estimated to have a remaining population of only about 200 pairs.

Group services versus Private services?

This is a question we all need to ask ourselves when planning a trip. The answer depends largely on the age, the particular interests of each person and, above all, the economy of each passenger. Below, we list the differences between conducting a group service versus a private service. It should be noted that, in either of the two modalities, you will receive top quality care from the entire team of professionals who will make your trip unforgettable

Group Services

  • The driver follows the stops designated by the tour
  • Groups can have between 15 and 20 people
  • Guidance is simultaneous in English and Spanish for the entire group
  • The itinerary has to be strict to fulfill the daily plan
  • Guidance is available at the same time for the entire group
  • The main advantage of group services is the affordable price

Private Services

  • The driver will make the necessary stops where you indicate
  • Of 5 or more people, the private service has a similar price to the group service.
  • You own the time you want to have at each stop
  • Guidance is in only 1 language and at the passenger’s choice (prior consultation for rare languages)
  • The guide will be available only for you and attentive to your requirements
  • The travel experience becomes much more personal and deep in knowledge

We urge you to get in touch with us so we can design your trip to Peru together, probably combining some excursions in private and some in group services. Our team of experienced voyagers knows what it means to plan a trip of a lifetime as well as the investment that implies, therefore, we want everything to go perfect.

  • Take your binoculars and experience 2 days marveling the variety of the birds that we can find around the Abra Malaga area.

You will wake up very early this morning and drive for 3 hours if you have spent the last night in Cusco or 1 ½ hours if you have spent the night in the Sacred Valley, so we highly recommend to choose a lodge in Ollantaytambo town, which is also a wonderful Inca town with a great archaeological complex that you can visit.

Arriving at place, you will begin your birding activity in a large patch of Chusquea bamboo where you should see Parodi’s Hemispingus (endemic) and Puna Thistletail (endemic). Other possibilities throughout the day include: Drab, Three-striped, Black-eared and Black-capped Himispingus, Golden-collared and other Tanagers, White-throated and White-banded Tyrannulets, Andean Ibis, Unstreaked Tit-tyrant (endemic), White-rumped Hawk, Sierran Elaenia, Marcapata Spinetail (endemic), Inca Wren (endemic), Diademed and Trilling Tapaculo and much more. We can also see Rufous and Undulated Antpitta’s. In the afternoon we will look for the Cusco Brush Finch (endemic). We will return to the Sacred Valley of the Incas in the evening and overnight in Ollantaytambo.

Another early wake up will be needed today. You will head for the Polylepis woodland at Abra Malaga. The whole morning will be devoted to explore this unique habitat. Possibilities include Line-fronted Canastero, Ash-breasted Tit-tyrant (endemic), White-browed Tit-spinetail (endemic), Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Giant Conebill, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Andean Tapaculo, Tit-like Dacnis, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Andean Condor, Thick-billed Siskin, Junin Canastero (endemic) and more. Our major target bird here will be the endemic Royal Cinclodes, that were discovered in the 80’s that forages on the floor of Polylepis woodlands and adjacent scrub. On the valley floor you will check a variety of Ground-tyrants and Sierra-Finchs. After a picnic lunch you have to focus on some local endemics on the west side, including Creamy-crested Spinetail, (endemic) Rusty-fronted Canastero, (endemic) White-tufted Sunbeam (endemic) and Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch (endemic). After a great day in this prolific area you will return to your hotel located in Cusco or Sacred Valley.

Ask our experts travel advisors to complete your trip with an extension to the impressive citadel of Machu Picchu, the challenging Inca Trail, the impressive Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, the majestic Colca Canyon, the mysterious Nazca lines, the enigmatic jungle or the Kingdom of the Chachapoyas.
